Microsoft is pulling the plug on the Xbox Live services that still cater to the original Xbox. As of April 15th, all Xbox 1 games -- including those playable on Xbox 360 or via the Xbox Originals service -- will be severed from the online realm. "I want to start by saying this isn't a decision we made lightly," Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten said at the start of a letter to Xbox Live members, "but after careful consideration, it is clear that this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox Live community."
Whitten added that in continuing to "evolve the service," Microsoft requires changes that are "incompatible" with the previous console's games. "We will contact the Xbox LIVE members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your LIVE messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities."
According to Major Nelson's most recent list of top Xbox 1 Live titles, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Counter-Strike players will be hardest hit. Well, sure, Halo 2 is still the most widely played game, but at least those guys will have some consolation when they leave the house and discover that two more Halo games have come out since 2004.

"The oft debated issue of Xbox Live pricing has arisen once again, only this time it’s being tackled by Microsoft employees in the form of Microsoft’s Gamerscore Blog. Will the age old question “Sony’s is free, how come Xbox Live isn’t?” be answered once and for all?
“There are bandwidth costs, there are things that go above and beyond”, said Chris Paladino of the Xbox Community Team. “I think it goes back to this unified system. We have to have voice communication, text and voice communication, now we’re doing cross-platform. There’s Marketplace, there are demos, and all these things don’t just mystically hover around that you can pull them out of the ether.”
Microsoft PR manager Michael Wolf chimed in to add that “you get what you pay for” and that satisfaction levels with Xbox Live have been very high. He also made a comparison between Live and Cable television, noting that he pays 100 bucks a month for cable and spends more time on Live which only costs 50$ a year. The fact remains that there is no significant counterpoint to Xbox Live. The Playstation Network is free, but doesn’t deliver a fraction of what you get with Live. Until there is a free counterpoint to Live, cost arguments are more or less moot. It’s up to the consumer to decide if his 50$ a year is justified or not."

Having turned a blind eye for some time now, Microsoft is finally moving to clamp down on people who set up foreign Xbox Live accounts in order to download content they can't access locally.
In a statement released overnight, Microsoft said that the territory controls would be strengthened by next week's "Spring Update" for the Xbox 360 dashboard, due out 7th May, which also introduces Live Messenger support among other things.
While this will have very little effect on Xbox Live users whose account details match up to their point of origin, it means, for example, that anybody in the UK who has set up a US account in order to access downloadable films and TV shows made available to US customers will see that access cut off from next week. The practice is also popular with gamers who want to try out Japanese and US game demos.
The statement, posted on the Microsoft-run Gamerscoreblog, explained that it was Microsoft's responsibility to comply with government regulations and licensing agreements that determine where content is to be made available.
"As a general policy we try to get global rights to content, but in some cases, it's not possible because of legal restrictions," the statement added. "In other instances, we have to get legal rights on a country-by-country basis, which unfortunately results with us having content on the service that has to be filtered based on geographical location."
Microsoft said it hoped users would understand "our responsibility, and the necessary security requirements that need to be in place in order to comply with applicable laws and [to] honour our agreements with content providers," and concluded by advising any US Xbox Live users who experience problems accessing content following the release of the Spring Update to call 1-800-4MY-XBOX to receive assistance.
